Prompt 7

May 7th

LISTEN TO ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE SONGS AND WRITE A POEM DIRECTLY AFTER BASED ON THE FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS IT BROUGHT ABOUT IN YOU. LET MUSIC INSPIRE POETRY. -https://www.readpoetry.com/22-poetry-prompts-to-help-you-write-your-next-great-poem/

The song that I used for this prompt is "All Too Well" (10 min version) by Taylor Swift. I love her songs that tell stories and man, this one is a doozy. I've always loved the original version, but this version is just so powerful and is perfect.

This poem actually is also based off of a novel that I have been writing in the background for years. It's one that means the world to me, but I never really had the connecting factor for it until this year.  This poem is about my two characters Gloria and Westley whose relationship ended in a terrible way. In the poem, I have Gloria remembering Westley in the little moments that connected them in their relationship, whether that be the good ones or the bad ones. It was interesting looking at the characters in this way and I'm glad I took the time to do it today.

She forgot him over the years,

At least she said she did,

The way they used to dance around his mother's kitchen

Listening to one of their songs loudly when his parents weren't there.

The beach where they would lay out all night long talking

About the future that he pretended he wanted with her

Not the future he actually planned for himself.

There she was again in the moments that she loved him so

Spinning around his sister's wedding

Laughing in pure bliss.

He was a spark of happiness in her life

Until he wasn't.

The fights began early on

And she continued to pretend that it was nothing,

That they were okay,

That their love would be enough.

She realized over time that they weren't okay

That his side comments about her maturity,

                                                            Her nature,

                                                                Her everything

Were just signs.

To him, she'd always be this crazy girl

That he met dancing around,

Chanting Shakespeare in a kiddie pool

And as time went on, he became the man that made her miserable

Whenever she was around him.

And with time, she realized that

Their love would never be enough

Because she would never lose herself

To keep a boy that made her

                                            Fake smiles,

                                                    Lose her faith,

                                                            Cry until she fell asleep.

They ended like a candle being blown out,

Quick but quiet.

Sometimes, she went back to the moments

                                                    That she loved him so

Spinning in a chair after hours of working on homework

A pure blissful moment of laughter.

But in all honesty,

The good times were never quite enough.

And the memories were just that...

                                                Memories.
