Books That Feature Time Travel/Time Loops/Time-stuck Characters

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Books I Love That Feature Time Travel/Time Loops/Time-Unstuck Characters

Here are ten books I love that have time being played with in various ways.

1. Slaughterhouse- Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.- Time-Unstuck Characters

- One of the strangest and most thought-provoking books I have ever read. It’s part autobiographical, part historical fiction, and part science fiction. Billy’s story deals with the horrors of war, a search for meaning in life, being displaced in time, and alien abduction. The non-chronological storytelling made this a masterpiece.

2. Night Watch by Terry Pratchett- Time travel

- My favorite of the Watch books from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. I love watching Sam Vimes travel back in time and mentor his younger self. This is often said to be one of the best Discworld books and I definitely agree with that.

3. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger- Time Travel

- The Time Traveler’s Wife was my favorite book in high school. I love how Audrey wrote this book so much and how intricately interwoven it is.

4. Lost in a Good Book by Jasper Fforde- Time travel

- I love the books I have read from the Thursday Next series so far. It deals with book jumping and time travel.

5. The Indigo King by James A. Owen- Time travel/alternate history

- This book has so much that I love in literature with time travel, Greek Mythology, and King Arthur. I adore The Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica series and am looking forward to finishing it this year.

6. Midnight Strikes by Zeba Shahnaz- Time loop

- A Cinderella retelling dealing with a time loop.

7. Before the Fall by Lauren Oliver- Time loop

- Another favorite of mine from high school. It was the first book that got me interested in time loops.

8. Magic and Other Misdemeanors by Michael Buckley- Time travel

- The fifth book in The Sisters Grimm series. I enjoyed the mystery of this book and seeing how time travel was used throughout it.

9. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig- Time travel/alternate history

- Who hasn’t wondered what their life would be like if they chose a different path during it? Matt Haig always has such interesting ideas for his books; this one is at the top of that list for me so far. I enjoyed the overall story in this book and the many different paths Nora takes throughout. None of them go quite in the way she would assume.

10. The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England by Brandon Sanderson- Time travel/ alternate history

- I love how this deals with a man’s journey through time and also has guidebook pages throughout for traveling in time. It was formatted so cleverly.

Books I Would Like to Read That Feature Time Travel/Time Loops/Time-Unstuck Characters

Here are ten books I would like to read that deal with time travel, time loops, and time-unstuck characters.

1. How to Invent Everything: A Survival Guide for the Stranded Time Traveler by Ryan North- Time travel

- Ryan North has an incredible sense of humor and I really want to read this book soon.

2. Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montgomery- Time- Unstuck Character

- I picked this book up at a book sale last year because it sounds so good.

3. This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El- Mohtar & Max Gladstone- Time travel

- I will forever love me a time travel book and this is one of the most popular from recent years.

4. Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel- Time travel

- I don't know a ton about this book but I have heard nothing but incredible things about it for years.

5. Making History by Stephen Fry- Time travel/alternate history

- I love Stephen Fry's writing style and I have been meaning to pick up this book for a while. It is alternate history where someone goes back in time and prevents Hitler from being born.

6. One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston- Time travel

- I love Red, White, and Royal Blue and want to read more of Casey's books.

7. The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown- Time travel

- I need to pick up this book sometime soon. It was one of my most anticipated books of last year and I have yet to read it. I love the idea of books opening up doorways to other times and worlds.

8. The Jane Austen Project by Kathleen A. Flynn- Time travel

- A Jane Austen time travel book... I need to read it.

9. In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren- Time loop

- I love a Christmas romance and this one has one of my favorite things.

10. The Book that Wouldn’t Burn by Mark Lawrence- Time travel

- Another book about books and time travel... sounds perfect to me.

  5. Fun topic! I like these kinds of books as well. One of my favorite series that features time travel is the Rip in Time series by Kelley Armstrong. The books are murder mysteries, but they're about a modern-day detective who gets swept back to Victorian Scotland and uses her knowledge to solve murders there.

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

  6. I have also read and enjoyed Night Watch and Lost in a Good Book. I have read and recommend This is How You Lose the Time War (mostly for the voice) and Sea of Tranquility (do NOT read the end first,as I did). Connie Willis has written several books featuring time travel, are you familiar with her work? TNT
