Authors I Have Met/Would Like to Meet

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Authors I Have Met

Over the years, I have met many different authors and poets because of my classes and the events I attended during college. Here are six of the authors and poets I was able to meet. I also put some of the books or poetry collections they have written.

1. Nick Flynn

~ Some of his books and poetry collections:

Another Bullshit Night in Suck City
    - The Reenactments: Poems
    Some Ether: Poems
    - The Ticking Is the Bomb: A Memoir
    - My Feelings: Poems

    - One of my majors in college was Creative Writing and our professors had many different authors come in to talk with us. Nick Flynn is a poet and nonfiction writer. He came in to talk about his book Another Bullshit Night in Suck City which became the movie Being Flynn. It is a memoir about when he re-encountered his father while working in a homeless shelter. We had read the memoir and watched the movie in class.

He did a talk at my university about how it was to see such a personal story of his become a movie with actors such as Robert De Niro playing his father and Paul Dano playing a young version of himself. After his talk, we were able to go up and talk with him and he signed our books. He was such a sweet man and I'll always remember my talk with him. Also, he personalized my book with a beautiful message. It was definitely one of my favorite memories from college.

2. Cynthia Hogue

Some of her poetry collections:

    - Revenance
    - instead, it is dark
    - In June the Labyrinth
    - The Woman in Red

    - In June 2015, my university (Bloomsburg University) hosted the 25th Annual Virginia Woolf conference and I read a paper there on the poet Mina Loy. Another of my fondest memories from my time in college. We went to a poetry reading of Cynthia Hogue where she read from her collection called Revenance and we also were able to get a copy of it. She is an amazing poet.

3. James Dashner

Some of his books:
    - The Maze Runner series ( books)
    - The Morality Doctrine series ( books)
    - The 13th Reality series ( books)
    - The Jimmy Fincher Saga ( books)

    - In 2014, I went to the NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) in DC and met many different authors there and was able to get a book signed by them. I had never read The Maze Runner series but one of my friends I went with to the conference wanted to meet James Dashner. So, I also stood in line with her to meet him. It was a very rushed line and was not the best experience for one of my first big author signings.

4. Natalie S. Harnett

Her book:
    - The Hollow Ground

    - Another author I met during one of my Creative Writing classes in college. I believe it was in my Introduction to Creative Writing course. We read her historical fiction book The Hollow Ground for the class and then she came in to talk about her inspirations for it. She also read sections from it and then signed our books at the end of her talk.

5. Tim Federle

Some of his books:
    - Better Nate Than Ever series
    - The Great American Whatever
    - Tequila Mockingbird: Cocktails with a Literary Twist
    - Life is Like a Musical: How to Live, Love, and Lead Like a Star

    - Another of the authors I met at NCTE in 2014. He was very nice to our group and made a hectic day so much better.

6. Melissa de la Cruz

~ Some of her books:
    - Blue Bloods series
    - Descendants series
    - Alex & Eliza series
    - The Queen's Assassin series

    - Another author I met at NCTE in 2014. Her line was also very long and she literally signed the book and said a quick hello to each of us. She seemed nice though the little bit I interacted with her.

Some Authors I wish I could have met/

Want to Meet

7. Terry Pratchett

Some of his books:
    - The Discworld series
    -  Good Omens
    -  Johnny Maxwell trilogy
    - Bromeliad trilogy
    - Dodger

    - Terry Pratchett is my favorite author and I cannot say how much I wish I could have met him while he was alive. He is one of my biggest inspirations as a writer. His books have a way of both making me think and getting me laughing. They are always a joy to read. I love how distinct his writing style was. It makes me sad that the world lost such a talent, though I agree with his quote: "No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away." from Reaper Man (Discworld #11)

8. T. Kingfisher

Some of her books:
    - The Saint of Steel series
    - A Sorceress Comes to Call
    - Swordheart series
    - Sworn Solider Series
    - Nettle & Bone
    - Hemlock & Silver
    -The Halcyon Fairy Book

    - My favorite author other than Terry Pratchett is definitely T. Kingfisher. I love her writing style very much and have heard she is an absolute joy to meet in person. She is definitely on the top of my list of authors that I would love to meet someday.

9. Madeline Miller
Some of her books:
    The Song of Achilles
    - Circe
    - Galatea

    - Another absolutely wonderful author, who I would love to get the opportunity to meet some day. Especially to get my original copy of The Song of Achilles signed by her. That would be the dream.

10. Chris Colfer

Some of his books:
    The Land of Stories series
    A Tale of Magic series
    Struck By Lightning
    - Stranger than Fanfiction
    - Roswell Johnson series

    - I have loved Chris Colfer ever since I first saw him on Glee back in 2009. His character Kurt Hummel was my favorite from the show and when I found out he was writing a fairy tale retelling/continuation series, I knew I had to read it. The Land of Stories series is one I wish I could have read growing up. It would have been everything to me from an early age. I still love this series to this day and have enjoyed all of his books that I have read. Chris is high on the list of authors and actors I would love to be able to meet someday.

Off the Trail ARC Review 🍂

Off the Trail

(Sanctuary Lake Retreat #1)

by Elle Waters

My Star Rating: 4.5 Stars

Page Count: 260 pages

Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance

Date Read: September 11th-12th

Publication Date: September 16th

Publisher: Lemon Tree Books

Review:

One of the coziest romances I have read in a while and I enjoyed every single page. The perfect book to read in the fall.

I was first drawn to this book because of the retreat. One of my favorite aspects of this story was getting to see Shawn and Blaze spend so much time together through the activities. I love when a romance focuses on building a bound between the romantic leads and when we really get to know them each by themselves too.

This was a heartfelt story and it felt healing. Both men have dealt with hardships in their lives and grow separately and together. It had all the charm of a small-town romance and great side characters. I look forward to reading more books in the Sanctuary Lake Retreat series.

*Thank you to Lemon Tree Books, Elle Waters, and NetGalley for my ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.*

If You Like this... Read this Indie/ Self-Published Book

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

If You Like this...
Read this Indie/ Self- Published Book

The prompt for this week's Top Ten Tuesday is Indie Freebie, where we pick whatever we want to dealing with Indie Published books. I have been wanting to do another If You Like this... Read this Book post and figured this would be the perfect chance to do that. I read a lot of indie and self-published books so this list was a hard one for me to narrow down. Here are some indie and self-published books I would like to recommend. I also put their age range, genres, and ratings on Goodreads. Many of the books on this list are not widely read and I'd love to give more visibility to them.

1. Encanto --> Illuminations by T. Kingfisher

Age Range & Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy

Ratings on Goodreads: 6,288

    - The book that gave me the idea for this post. Many of T. Kingfisher's books were self-published before they were published by traditional publishers. Illuminations is one of her books that is still only self-published. It is a middle grade book with family dynamics that reminded me quite a bit of Encanto. I loved the idea of the magical paintings (illuminations) and how T. Kingfisher took this idea throughout the book.

2. Peter Pan and LGBTQ+ Stories--> Peter Darling by Austin Chant

Age Range & Genre: Adult LGBTQ+ Fantasy Romance Retelling of Peter Pan with trans characters by a trans author

Ratings on Goodreads: 12,100

    - I was surprised when I looked up my review for this book that it has been almost ten years since I read it. It is a LGBTQ+ retelling of Peter Pan. I remember really enjoying reading it back in 2017, but I will say it has been quite a while since I read it. I do remember really loving Austin Chant's writing.

3. The Barbie movies from the early 2000's --> The Herbwitch's Apprentice (The Witches of Oldera #1) by Ireen Chau

Age Range & Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Ratings on Goodreads: 1,877

    - The author herself has described this series as a perfect read for fans of Ella Enchanted and the Barbie movies from the early 2000s. These are two perfect recs for at least the first book. I haven't read the others yet. It is a very cozy fantastical version of the Regency time period. They are all also beautifully illustrated by the author.

4. Mystery set in a Fantastical Regency Time Period--> Talismans, Teacups & Trysts (Alderwood Regency Fantasies #1) by K. Starling

Age Range & Genre: Adult Fantasy Mystery

Ratings on Goodreads: 157

    - This book is perfect for fans of Jane Austen who also love a great fantasy story with a mystery thrown in. I absolutely love the mix of the Regency time period with a fantastical world. Some day I want to pick up the next book in this series because I highly enjoyed this one.

5. LGBTQ+ version of a Hallmark Christmas Movie --> The Hartbridge Christmas Series by N. R. Walker

Age Range & Genre: Adult Contemporary Christmas Romance

Ratings on Goodreads:

#1- 5245, #2- 3708, #3- 2688, #4- 2380, #5- 2067, and #6- 1233

    - It wouldn't be an indie book list for me if I didn't recommend at least one book by my favorite indie author, N. R. Walker. I absolutely love most of the books I have read from her so far, especially the Hartbridge Christmas series. N. R. Walker's writing in this series is incredibly sweet and hilarious. These books make me laugh out loud so often. I particularly love the running joke in this series about Gay Cupid and Santa working together. The friend group is such a great example of found family and I adore each of the groups of romantic leads. I have only read the first four books in the series, but will be continuing with the others this year.

6. Beautifully Illustrated LGBTQ+Graphic Novels/Webcomics --> Finding Home series by Hari Conner

Age Range & Genre: Adult Fantasy LGBTQ+ Romance Graphic Novel/ Webcomic

Ratings on Goodreads: #1- 425, #2- 321, #3- 247, and #4- 184

    - I absolutely love Hari Conner's writing. Their artstyle for their webcomics is probably my favorite out of all of the webcomics I have read over the years. It is absolutely stunning. Not enough people have read these books.

7. LGBTQ+ Road Trip Books --> Thirty Things by Cate Ashwood

Age Range & Genre: Adult Contemporary LGBTQ+ Romance

Ratings on Goodreads: 532

    - One of my all-time favorite contemporary romances that I love getting the chance to recommend whenever possible. Road trip stories are always favorites for me and I love this friends to lovers version of that. This is one of my comfort reads that I read when I need a pick-me-up. It brings me so much joy.

8. Darker Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Retellings --> Taking Wonderland Series by Martin Baynton

Age Range & Genre: Young Adult Fantasy Mystery

Ratings on Goodreads: #1- 97 & #2- 17

    - I have recommended this series quite a bit on this blog because of how much I enjoy it. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Retellings are one of my biggest passions in literature and I think this one is such a great take on the world. I have read a lot of Wonderland retellings over the years and this is one of my absolute favorites. It is a dark take on the world with an interesting mystery of what is going on. I love both books, but the second is my favorite so far. Cannot wait for the final book.

9. LGBTQ+ Fairy Tales --> The Story of The Hundred Promises by Neil Cochrane

Age Range & Genre: Adult Fantasy LGBTQ+ Romance with trans characters by a trans author

Ratings on Goodreads: 294

    - I will gush about this wonderful book until the end of time. It is a very loose retelling of Beauty and the Beast with a stunning writing style. I love how the tales are weaved together throughout the entire story. One of the top books on this list that I would love to reread sometime soon.

10. Cozy Academia Stories --> Scholarly Pursuits: A Queer Anthology of Cozy Academia Stories
edited by Nina Waters

Age Range & Genres: Adult Cozy Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Mystery, and Science Fiction LGBTQ+ stories

Ratings on Goodreads: 16

    - A collection of 22 short stories set in universities, colleges, libraries, and other places where the characters pursue academics. I enjoyed this collection of stories and highly recommend it. My favorites are: "A Clockwork Warmth," "Living Legends," "Caffeine and the Unsleeping," "Courtship by Marginalia," and "The Cat in the Library." A great charming book full of cozy stories.
