Happy National Poetry Month!

Poetry has been a major part of my life for about 20 years now. I started writing it in eighth grade (around 2007) and really got into it during high school. Over the years, I have written over 200 poems.

Below, I'm going to share some verses from my favorite poems, my favorite poetry collections, epic poems, and novels in verse. Also, I'll share examples of ones I would like to read soon. Each cover is linked to Goodreads if you click on the image.

What are some of your favorites or ones you'd like to read?

Here's to a month celebrating one of my favorite forms of writing. I know I will be reading a few of my poetry collections and novels in verse.

Happy Reading!

 Poetry Collections

I highly recommend every one of the poetry collections below. They are great collections that I have read over the years, including many classic and modern day writers. There are many repeat poets here because I absolutely love their works. My favorite poet is Nikita Gill.

Some Poetry Collections I'm Going to Read Soon

The first four of books are the poetry collections that I own and I am planning on reading sometime this year. I started the Tolkien collection, which is three volumes. Mina Loy's collection has been on my TBR for a long time. I enjoyed what I read of her poems in college and would like to read some of her collections. The last two books are ARCs I have that I want to read sometime this month.

Epic Poetry

Epic Poetry was something I was first introduced to in high school through works like Beowulf, The Odyssey by Homer and Dante's Inferno. I have been obsessed with this form of writing ever since and I have a dream of writing one myself someday. It is so interesting to see the types of forms that these writers use to create their epics and how creative they get with them.

Here are some of my favorite examples of epic poetry which I highly recommend.

There are plenty of other epics I have read in high school and during college that I would like to give a second chance to. I particularly want to read the J. R. R. Tolkien translations of Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. I did enjoy Beowulf in eleventh grade, but never loved it. My problem with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, I believe was the translation my professor used in college, which I did not enjoy much at all. I love King Arthur tales, so I would like to give it another go. Here are some examples of epic poems I would like to read again soon.

Some Epic Poetry I'd Like to Read Soon

I don't know when I'll get to Don Juan by Lord Byron or The Faerie Queen by Edmund Spenser, but I will be reading Galahad and the Grail by Malcom Guite sometime this month. It is one of the many ARCs that I have and I decided to save it for National Poetry Month. Thought it would be the perfect time to read this modern day epic that is written in ballads. Looking forward to this Arthurian adventure.

Novels Written in Verse

Novels in Verse have been some of my favorite types of books ever since I was in middle school. I vividly remember when I found my first of these books One of those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies by Sonya Sones, in my middle school/high school library and read it as soon as I was done with my homework that night.

As a poet, I am obsessed with the idea of writing a book through poetry. I'm working on outlining my own novel written in verse. It is going to be quite the project.

Some Novels in Verse I'm Going to Read Soon

There are many different novels in verse I would like to pick up in the near future, but these are the top priorities for me. Suffer a Witch by Joy Mccullough is an ARC I have that I will be reading soon.
