September Reads 2025

 πŸ‚ September Reviews πŸ

September 1st-30th

2025 has been a great reading year for me. This was the month where I read the least amount of books, but I enjoyed the majority of them. I even found a couple new favorites. Here are the 11 books I read during September.

Book 136: Katabasis

By R. F. Kuang

Read September 1st-3rd

Pages: 550

Release Year: 2025

πŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“š

I highly enjoyed this descent into Hell with Alice and Peter. Mythology has been one of my great loves ever since I was very young. A katabasis (descent into the Underworld) is definitely one of the stories I have always been drawn to over the years.

It was interesting to see the version of Hell Alice and Peter experience during the book. Their odyssey was not only physical but also mental. The narrative was nonlinear in many different parts which added a lot to their story as a whole. I enjoyed seeing the depictions of the Underworld/Hell, but their journey with mortality and the trials they faced were what kept me invested in their story.

This book is a new favorite for me that I know I will want to revisit again in years to come. I would love to pick this up along with rereading Dante's Inferno. R. F. Kuang's writing was brilliant and I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

Book 137: Conrad's Fate (Chrestomanci #5)

By Diana Wynne Jones

Read September 4th-7th

Pages: 352

Release Year: 2005

πŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“š

Conrad's Fate is one of my favorites from the series so far, especially because I enjoyed Conrad's character very much. He was one of the best protagonists besides Christopher. I'll always love seeing the different worlds Diana created in these books. The way the magic worked in this one was quite interesting and I enjoyed learning what was going on along with the characters. It was great to get a young Christopher again in this book. He is definitely my favorite character from the series.

Book 138: Cinder House

By Freya Markse

Read September 8th

Pages: 144

Release Year: 2025

πŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“š

Anna Burnett does a wonderful job narrating Ella's story. Cinder House is one of the most interesting fairy tale retellings I have ever read and it's probably my favorite take on "Cinderella." I was drawn into the story because of the interesting premise and fell in love with it because of Ella's voice and her character.

Along with Ella's character, I loved this take on the prince. I will not spoil anything about his plot line, but I love how Freya Marske chose to take it.

This is a queer take on a classic tale that I could not get enough of, especially the way it plays with ghosts. Ella was tethered to the house throughout the entire book, which is what happens to all ghosts in the world of this story. The way magic worked throughout also intrigued me and I loved seeing different types of magic being used.

Freya's version of "Cinderella" was fresh and new in a way retellings aren't always. It had me wondering what was going to happen in a story I have known my whole life. I highly recommend reading this beautiful novella.

Book 139: The Midnight Carnival

By Kenny Gould

Read September 11th-13th

Pages: 236

Release Year: 2025

πŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“š

Kenny Gould said in his acknowledgements that he set out to write a cozy fantasy which felt like a warm hug. He definitely accomplished this in The Midnight Carnival. I loved Max's charming story and learning about this contemporary fantasy world. Some of the best parts of the book were getting to know the many different creatures and seeing how they were willing to work together to get the carnival in shape for its opening.

Kenny balanced the lighthearted scenes along with the heavier topics, such as the way many humans are trying to separate themselves from the monsters. I enjoyed getting to see their various perspectives on what was going on. It would be interesting to see other tales set in this world.

Book 140: Persuasion

By Jane Austen

Read September 15th-17th

Pages: 272

Release Year: 1817

πŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“š

I wanted to love this book but it wasn't as great as I thought it was going to be. It has one of my favorite quotes from literature which I have loved ever since I first heard it in a collection years ago:

"I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago..."

There are many beautiful sections in this story, but it just wasn't for me at this time.

Book 141: Not Quite by the Book

By Julie Hatcher

Read September 18th

Pages: 317

Release Year: 2025

πŸ“šπŸ“š

Another romance book that was not what I wanted. It takes inspiration from You've Got Mail which is one of my absolute favorite movies. I thought it was instantly going to be a new favorite, but the romance didn't work for me.

I'm not fond of how the miscommunication trope was used throughout the book. It took up too much of the plot. Also, I could not stand the amount of lying. There were so many times that I just wanted them to sit down and have a conversation instead of running off from each other.

I was hoping for more scenes of them together throughout the book, so we could watch their love grow. The romance never felt real. There were some cute scenes of them together, but there wasn't enough. It would have been nice to get more of their online communications along with their real-life interactions. One of the best parts of a book like this is seeing those types of exchanges.

My favorite part of the book was the pure love of literature so many of the characters shared. I enjoyed reading the Emily Dickinson quotes throughout. The setting was another great aspect. Small town romances are wonderful, especially when you get to know so many of the side characters. I really liked how the language of flowers was used in this book.

Not Quite By the Book was a story I wanted to love, but it fell flat for me.

Book 142: The Pumpkin Spice
(Dream Harbor #1)

By Laurie Gilmore

Read September 19th-20th

Pages: 373

Release Year: 2023

πŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“š

I enjoyed this corny little small town romance. It reminded me a lot of many of the Hallmark movies, except with spicy scenes. This was exactly what I wanted from this book. I will be reading the next book in the series.

Book 143: J.R.R. Tolkien: The Father of Modern Fantasy

By Don Marshall

Read September 22nd-24th

Pages: 240

Release Year: 2025

πŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“š

A perfect book for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien. Don Marshall gives so much information on Tolkien's life, literary works, and his cultural impact. I have been a fan of Tolkien for so many years and still learned plenty of new information from this book.

Readers get to see where some of his inspiration came from for his most famous works, along with other interesting tidbits and facts. I love how there were so many quotes from Tolkien's writings throughout the book. This would be a great addition to anyone's Tolkien collection. I know I will definitely get a physical copy to go along with his books.

*Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.*

Book 144: The Court of the Dead
(The Nico di Angelo Adventures #2)

By Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro

Read September 25th-26th

Pages: 448

Release Year: 2025

πŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“š

Rick always does a wonderful job making his books topical, while keeping them true to his world. He has a distinct voice which shines through even when writing with someone else.

Nico has grown tremendously since he was first introduced in The Titan's Curse. I have loved seeing him develop as a character. His relationship with Will is adorable and I look forward to seeing more of it in the future. I love that we got to see him with his sister Hazel quite a lot in this book. They have a great dynamic.

Another wonderful adventure in the world of Percy Jackson. I highly enjoyed visiting so many of these characters again while meeting such interesting new ones. I cannot wait to see where Rick will take the next story.

Book 145: Lacuna

By N. R. Walker

Read September 27th-28th

Pages: 400

Release Year: 2020

πŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“š

I highly enjoyed this fantasy world and romance.

September 29th, 2025 Reread:
One of my favorite poetry collections that I love rereading every couple of years.

October 6th, 2023 Reread:
I highly recommend this wonderful poetry collection. It is not only stunning to look at but the poems are incredible in every way. I cannot say how much I enjoyed my experience rereading this gem.

August 1st, 2021 Review:
This was a wonderful collection of poetry dealing with many different animals and plants. I love books like this so much, that gets me thinking. I'm very glad that I found this book yesterday at a book sale. It was a stunning collection that I enjoyed so much. Beautiful!

Speak now (Taylor's Version) πŸ’œ

This was the only Taylor's Version that I did not listen to from the beginning for my first listen through. The reason behind this is quite simple, I had to hear "Enchanted" first and then I listened to the rest of the album.

"Enchanted" is a magical song which has always brought me absolute joy. It makes me want to dance around singing just like it did in 2010. Taylor did a wonderful job with this entire album and I adore every time I listen to it.

Favorite Vault tracks: "Foolish One" and "Electric Touch."

Book Covers that Give off Autumnal Vibes

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Book Covers that Give off Autumnal Vibes

I decided to break this list up into books I have read and ones I would like to read. There are so many beautiful covers that give off autumnal vibes. These are some of my favorites.

"I want your midnights" πŸ’™

Midnights is one of Taylor's albums that I don't listen to in full very often. I enjoy many of the songs quite a bit but it has never been a favorite of mine.

My favorite songs from the album are: "Hits Different," "You're On Your Own, Kid," "Midnight Rain," "Question...?," "Mastermind," and "Would've, Could've, Should've."

Red (Taylor's Version) ❤️

Red TV is probably the Taylor's version project many Swifties remember the most fondly because of how much Taylor put into it. We got two new music videos/a short film, so many new vault songs, and finally got the ten minute version of "All Too Well" that Taylor had been talking about for years. I have always loved the original version of "All Too Well," but the ten minute version is one of her best.

Most of her Taylor's versions for her original songs were done incredibly well and I enjoy listening to them just as much as the original album. So many of the vault songs are great. Also, I loved the performance she did on SNL for "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)." One of her best. Red is an album that holds a special place in my heart and I enjoyed revisiting it in this new way.

Favorite vault tracks: "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)," "The Very First Night," "Message in a Bottle," and "Forever Winter."

Fearless (Taylor's Verison) πŸ’›

Fearless was the album other than Taylor's debut, that I was most excited to hear the Taylor's Version for because of how long it has been since the original came out. I had tears in my eyes multiple times listening to her sing these songs that I have loved for so long in her grownup voice. This album is absolute perfection in every way.

This has some of my favorites From the Vault songs. My favorites from this vault are definitely: "Mr. Perfectly Fine" and "That's When."

"That this pain would be for evermore" 🀎

Taylor's album evermore is the one that came out closest to my birthday which is on December 10th (it came out on December 11th). It has one of my absolute favorite songs from any Taylor Swift album which is "right where you left me." I cannot believe that this song was only a deluxe track. It definitely references Miss Havisham from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I enjoy the literary references Taylor uses on her albums. She's always had them but folklore and evermore is where she started using them quite a bit more.

My favorite songs from the album are: "right where you left me," "no body, no crime," "long story short," "gold rush," and "tis the damn season."

"Turns your life into folklore" 🩢

I love songs that tell a story and Taylor's folklore is full of such incredible ones. It was a great surprise when she decided to release this secretly in July 2020. For her eighth studio album, she experimented with a new sound which obviously worked out incredibly well.

My favorite songs from the album are: "august," "illicit affairs," "the last great american dynasty," "betty," and "exile."

"Darling, you're my, my, my, my Lover" 🩷

Taylor's seventh album, Lover has many songs that I love listening to quite often in my rotation of her music. "Cruel Summer" has been one of my favorites of hers ever since it first came out in 2019 and it's great that it has gotten so popular over the years.

My favorite songs from the album are: "Cruel Summer," "London Boy," "Cornelia Street," "I Think He Knows," "Death By a Thousand Cuts," and "Paper Rings."

"Big reputation" πŸ–€

I remember being very excited for new music from Taylor in 2017. It was the longest period between albums, since she always had her albums come out every two years. I loved "Look What You Made Me Do" and was highly looking forward to seeing what else would be on the album. reputation was definitely everything I wanted from it. My favorite from the album was "Getaway Car" and it still is to this day.

My favorites from the album are: "Getaway Car," "I Did Something Bad," "Look What You Made Me Do," and "New Year's Day."

Books on My Fall 2025 TBR

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Books on My Fall 2025 TBR

Happy Fall everyone! Fall is my favorite season and I am really looking forward to seeing what books I get to during the next couple of months. There are many series I plan on either finishing or at least continuing in. These are some of the books I plan on reading by the end of the year.

1. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

    -  Another classic that I have been meaning to read for years.

2. Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson

    - The fourth book in The Stormlight Archive. I have loved my time with the series and I would at least like to get to this book by the end of the year. Hopefully, I'll also read Wind and Truth.

3. Lacuna by N. R. Walker

    - I have owned Lacuna for a couple of years now and have yet to pick it up. This is definitely one I hope to get to sometime soon since I love N. R. Walker's books so much.

4. The Herbwitch Princess (Witches of Oldera #2) by Irene Chau

     - I read The Herbwitch Apprentice earlier this year and am looking forward to seeing what will happen in the sequel.

5. Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice

     - One of my favorite horror/fantasy movies is definitely Interview with the Vampire. I have been wanting to read this book ever since I first saw the movie and will definitely be doing so in October.

6. Hooky, Volume 3 by MΓriam Bonastre Tur

     - Yet, another series I started a few years ago that I plan on finishing by the end of the year. Definitely, looking forward to seeing what happens with Dani and Dorian in the final book.

7. Set in Stone by Mari Mancusi

     - I enjoyed many of the books in the Twisted Tales series and have been wanting to read this one which is based on Disney's The Sword in the Stone/King Arthur tales. King Arthur has always been one of my favorite topics to read about, so I need to read it very soon.

8. Rewitched by Lucy Jane Wood

     - I have been eagerly awaiting for Fall to come to read Rewitched. It seems like the perfect autumnal book to get into the season. I love witchy books.

9. The Pinhoe Egg and Mixed Magics: Four Tales of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones

     - This year, I have been reading through the entire Chrestomanci series and I am definitely going to finish it within the next couple of months. Only one book left and the collection of short stories. I'll have to figure out what books of Diana's I want to read after these.

10. Johnny and the Bomb (Johnny Maxwell #3) by Terry Pratchett

     - Another series I want to finish reading in 2025. I plan on reading it in October.
